Here's an idea from deep left-center field where "the Gardener" roams: Stop using taxpayer incentives to encourage building on the riverfront. The proposal made herein of Council taking a 7th-inning stretch, a loooooooooong one, is excellent.
The MAGA majority on the Council needs to digest what is ongoing and fasten their seatbelts for the future chaos soon to be upon us as both the crony-loving federal and state governments are attempting to turn the present order upside down -- or in the argot of gangsters, now in vogue, perpetuate a shakedown. Isn't that what smash-and-grab gangs in suits do? Trump intends to further enrich the proliferating would-be Midases, so they should be able to indulge in any riverfront development their dividends allow.
Our team captain DeSantis intends to do something similar with his tax-abatement chatter emanating from far-right field, which is actually shifting the tax burden even further onto regular folks. A prime example of this is pointed out in a 5/22/25 op-ed in the Orlando Sentinel by Scott Maxwell: One percent (sic) of corporations in Florida pay income taxes. Florida consumers got $1 billion in tax relief in recent years; corporations and businesses got $5 billion. " ... eBay— which posted $34 million worth of profits mined from Florida one year and theoretically should’ve paid $1.8 million in taxes — was able to pay only $18,810." We wuz robbed!
The MAGA game plan is backasswards if you consider The Big Deal made in the late Middle Ages that businesses and the wealthy pay taxes in exchange for government providing internal improvements (NOT incentives) and the securing of property rights.
For both the fiscal and environmental health of the city and its future: TIME OUT!
DVI, DIA, SCFD…it’s just another step in the alphabet soup charade to empower the continuing land grab. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Deplorable.
